Toolkit: Empathize and Define - Curso Design Thinking

I. Guidelines for Interviewing

These guidelines will help you set the tone for the interview and get the most out of it.
1. You may bring a few prepared questions, but the most important thing is to maintain a connection with the interviewee and show that you are listening to what they are saying (ie, look at them, not just at your notes). Also, you should always follow up on interesting answers, instead of mechanically moving through a list of questions.
2. Take notes or record the interview. Capture on paper the person’s own words whenever possible, instead of rephrasing during the interview. If you record the audio of the interview (with permission), you will need to extract quotes from the recording later.

3. Start the interview by introducing yourself and the project you are working on, and start with lighter, more general questions to establish a connection and put the interviewee at ease.

4. Listening is as important as talking (your interviewee should talk about 75% of the time). Also, showing that you are really interested in what the other person has to say goes a long way. Think of the interview as aconversation.

5. Ask open-ended, non-leading questions: “What do you think about that school?” is a better question than “Don’t you think that school is great?” The former doesn’t imply there is a right answer.

6. Be curious and ask “why?” often, even when you think you know the answer. Many answers will surprise you. Always follow up on answers that sound interesting, or whenever the interviewee says “I think...” A good way of doing this, in addition to asking “Why?” is to say “Tell me more about that.”

7. Ask for stories about concrete events. Instead of asking people how do they "usually" do things or how do they "usually" feel, ask them about the last time they did something, or the most memorable moment (in fact, do NOT use “usually” at all).

8. Don’t be afraid of silence. Resist the need to ask another question when there is a pause. The interviewee might reflect on what he/she has just said and say something deeper.

*Bonus points* If you have access to observing someone during an event that is relevant to the challenge (for instance, writing a resume, looking for jobs on the internet, etc.) and can talk to them while observing them in action, that would be extremely valuable to get insights about the challenge from the point of view of that person.

II. Guidelines for the Empathy Map

Using the Empathy Map framework you will process what happened in the interview, make inferences about the thoughts and feelings of the person based on what they said, and connect the dots to identify a need or problem he/she has related to the challenge.

We suggest that you spend about 20 to 30 min creating the empathy map (longer if you need to transcribe an audio recording of the interview).

Go through the sections of the empathy map in this order:

SAY section. Write down here all the quotes from the interview that catch your attention as you review your notes. Be as literal as possible (as opposed to rephrasing what they said in your own words). The number of quotes you have here will depend on how rich the interview was, but think about 10-20.

DO section (optional). If you observed the person in action, describe here behaviors you saw. You can also combine interview and observation, by asking the person to walk you through what they are doing. **Note that you may not have anything in this section if you did not have the chance to do observations**

THINK and FEEL sections. Here is where you will make inferences (educated guesses) about the meaning of what the person said. You need to write down here what you infer the person thinks and feels (from their point of view) based on what they said and did.
What if you are wrong? You may very well be, but if you don’t take a leap and make inferences, you won’t get at deep unexpected needs. At later stages in the process you will get more data that will allow you to refine your understanding and definition of the problem.

III. Guidelines for the Problem Statement

With the problem statement, you encapsulate concrete problems related to the challenge for the person you interviewed. In the next stage (IDEATE - next week), you will creatively solve them.
Since the person you are designing for might not articulate any needs/problems related to the challenge (these would be implicit needs), it’s your job to make educated guesses about those needs, based on the stories and data you gathered in the interview.

Write Problem Statements in this form:

STAKEHOLDER needs a way to ________(PROBLEM/NEED)____ Because ____(INSIGHT)_____

STAKEHOLDER: Here you should describe the person you are designing for (one you interviewed). Use at least 5 adjectives to describe that person. Make sure you add enough information to paint a picture of the person to someone who has not met him/her (“A detailed-oriented, reliable, degree-holding accountant, who is curious and able to work in teams, as well as collaborative and creative”).

PROBLEM/NEED: Use VERBS instead of NOUNS to define the problem/need. Nouns are often already solutions: as an example, contrast “Joe needs a better pencil” with “Joe needs a better way to write” or “Joe needs a better way to capture data.” In the first case the solution is already implied in the problem statement, so there is only opportunity for incremental innovation. In the latter frames, there is an opportunity to come up with innovative solutions that may go beyond an improved pencil.

INSIGHT: Here you provide a justification for the need you stated. The insight often comes from connecting the dots between different elements on the empathy map.

In order to get a good Problem Statement, craft more than one and then select one that is not too narrow(eg, Joe needs to get a job as accountant) nor too broad (Joe needs a way to improve his career) to continue the process.

Here is a template that contains and Empathy Map and Problem Statement:

Cultivando o equilíbrio emocional - Reconhecer, regular e ampliar as habilidades emocionais

(video 3) The Context of the Innovator: People Curso Design Thinking

This is part 2 of 3 of Lecture 1 of the Design Thinking Action Lab - July 2013

People are at the center of the desing thinking process in more than one way. On one hand, you will be designing for people. You will need to understand others, and we'll see that when we dive into a design challenge. But also, designers work in teams. And here at the d.school we have students of all disciplines who come together and learn a common language of creative problem solving.

2. People

The Ten Faces

The Learning Personas

Individuals and organizations need to constantly gather new sources of information in order to expand their knowledge and grow, so the first three personas are learning roles. These personas are driven by the idea that no matter how successful a company currently is, no one can afford to be complacent. The world is changing at an accelerated pace, and today's great idea may be tomorrow's anachronism. The learning roles help keep your team from becoming too internally focused, and remind the organization not to be so smug about what you “know”. People who adopt the learning roles are humble enough to question their own worldview, and in doing so they remain open to new insights every day.

The Anthropologist is rarely stationary. Rather, this is the person who ventures into the field to observe how people interact with products, services, and experiences in order to come up with new innovations. The Anthropologist is extremely good at reframing a problem in a new way, humanizing the scientific method to apply it to daily life. Anthropologists share such distinguishing characteristics as the wisdom to observe with a truly open mind; empathy; intuition; the ability to "see" things that have gone unnoticed; a tendency to keep running lists of innovative concepts worth emulating and problems that need solving; and a way of seeking inspiration in unusual places.

The Experimenter
celebrates the process, not the tool, testing and retesting potential scenarios to make ideas tangible. A calculated risk-taker, this person models everything from products to services to proposals in order to efficiently reach a solution. To share the fun of discovery, the Experimenter invites others to collaborate, while making sure that the entire process is saving time and money.

The Cross-Pollinator
draws associations and connections between seemingly unrelated ideas or concepts to break new ground. Armed with a wide set of interests, an avid curiosity, and an aptitude for learning and teaching, the Cross-Pollinator brings in big ideas from the outside world to enliven their organization. People in this role can often be identified by their open mindedness, diligent note-taking, tendency to think in metaphors, and ability to reap inspiration from constraints.

The Organizing Personas

The next three personas are organizing roles, played by individuals who are savvy about the often counter-intuitive process of how organizations move ideas forward. At IDEO, we used to believe that the ideas should speak for themselves. Now we understand what the Hurdler, the Collaborator, and the Director have known all along: that even the best ideas must continuously compete for time, attention, and resources. Those who adopt these organizing roles don't dismiss the process of budget and resource allocation as “politics” or “red tape.” They recognize it as a complex game of chess, and they play to win.

The Hurdler
is a tireless problem-solver who gets a charge out of tackling something that's never been done before. When confronted with a challenge, the Hurdler gracefully sidesteps the obstacle while maintaining a quiet, positive determination. This optimism and perseverance can help big ideas upend the status quo as well as turn setbacks into an organization's greatest successes—despite doomsday forecasting by shortsighted experts.

The Collaborator
is the rare person who truly values the team over the individual. In the interest of getting things done, the Collaborator coaxes people out of their work silos to form multidisciplinary teams. In doing so, the person in this role dissolves traditional boundaries within organizations and creates opportunities for team members to assume new roles. More of a coach than a boss, the Collaborator instills their team with the confidence and skills needed to complete the shared journey.

The Director
has an acute understanding of the bigger picture, with a firm grasp on the pulse of their organization. Subsequently, the Director is talented at setting the stage, targeting opportunities, bringing out the best in their players, and getting things done. Through empowerment and inspiration, the person in this role motivates those around them to take center stage and embrace the unexpected.

The Building Personas

The four remaining personas are building roles that apply insights from the learning roles and channel the empowerment from the organizing roles to make innovation happen. When people adopt the building personas, they stamp their mark on your organization. People in these roles are highly visible, so you’ll often find them right at the heart of the action.

The Experience Architect
is that person relentlessly focused on creating remarkable individual experiences. This person facilitates positive encounters with your organization through products, services, digital interactions, spaces, or events. Whether an architect or a sushi chef, the Experience Architect maps out how to turn something ordinary into something distinctive—even delightful—every chance they get.

The Set Designer
looks at every day as a chance to liven up their workspace. They promote energetic, inspired cultures by creating work environments that celebrate the individual and stimulate creativity. To keep up with shifting needs and foster continuous innovation, the Set Designer makes adjustments to a physical space to balance private and collaborative work opportunities. In doing so, this person makes space itself one of an organization's most versatile and powerful tools.

The Storyteller captures our imagination with compelling narratives of initiative, hard work, and innovation. This person goes beyond oral tradition to work in whatever medium best fits their skills and message: video, narrative, animation, even comic strips. By rooting their stories in authenticity, the Storyteller can spark emotion and action, transmit values and objectives, foster collaboration, create heroes, and lead people and organizations into the future.

The Caregiver is the foundation of human-powered innovation. Through empathy, they work to understand each individual customer and create a relationship. Whether a nurse in a hospital, a salesperson in a retail shop, or a teller at an international financial institution, the Caregiver guides the client through the process to provide them with a comfortable, human-centered experience.

(video 2) The Context of the Innovator: Space (Curso Design Thinking)

This is part 1 of 3 of Lecture 1 of the Design Thinking Action Lab - July 2013

Before we dive into our design challenge next week, this week we are going to explore three aspects, space, people and process. We're going to start by doing a quick tour of the d.school space.

This is the atrium of the d.school. It has several spaces for students to pop up and work on their projects for a short time. It also has an open area that can be used for presentations, as is being used right now. This is the last day of the quarter, so lots of classes are doing their final project presentations.

This is one of the main teaching studios in the d.school. As you can see we have different furniture in the space. We have couches, tables on wheels, we have chairs and moving rolling whiteboards.

And, and we want every teacher to come to a space before class and stop and think how they want the space reconfigured.  To foster the kinds of interactions that they want to have in their classes. Do they want the students sitting, looking at something in the screen in front, or do they want teams working together. So this, default state is a very important design feature of this space.

This is the prototyping area where students have access to materials to build prototypes. Materials that are cheap and fast to build as well as other tools to build more refined prototypes. Right next to the physical prototyping room, we have a digital prototyping room. Where students can make videos and other digital assets for their prototypes.

The Bay Studio is the main area where student teams work. We have initiative rooms such as the K12 room over here. These are rooms for specific projects.
The Bay Studio é a área principal, onde as equipes de estudantes trabalham.

This in particular is the room for the K12 education project. You see lots of post-its and photos on the walls that represent the different projects that this initiative is working on. One thing that is very important, that is that this room doesn't belong to a person, but to a project.

And so, as soon as anyone working on the project gets inside the room they're smarter about the project. They know, they see the ideas and everything is very visible on the walls. This is the main area where student teams come to work on their projects.

As you can see we have, furniture that can be moved and reconfigured, as well as boards that slide to create private spaces for the teams to work. The teams have also boards that they can permanently have, work in progress. They can put these boards, in the space as they work and then when they're done they put them back in storage. At the Bay Studio we also have storage shelves.

And as you can see these are open, these are places for these students to leave their work in progress so that it's visible to others.

Here on the wall we can see examples of students reflections.

These are students who have taken an Introductory Design Thinking class and are reflecting visually on the process as they have experienced it.

Objetivos do curso:
níveis do corpo, mente e espírito.

O Ativismo Quântico e a Saúde

O Ativismo Quântico e a Educação

O Ativismo Quântico e a Economia Espiritual

O Ativismo Quântico na Política e na Mídia

O Ativismo Quântico e a Espiritualidade
